comfort enhancement, or changing the scene

First of all, welcome if you are new in this environment.

Before I start presenting the current ideas for this blog, I have to explain something simple, but kind of emotional for a Latin American blooded. I had a blog before this one, and I am abandoning it (and now that I published it, it’s official, phew!). The older virtual refuge was called Porto da intensidade, which in Portuguese – my native language – means “The port of intensity”.

When I created the old blog I was starting my journey on the reality of living in a foreigner country. When I say ‘staring the journey’, well… That basically means starting to organize life and PhD applications, and that phase took 1 year. At that stage my interest on blogging was to keep memories and some advice about big shifts in (my) life, while sharing experiences with others.

But, as everything in life, the time also goes by and at this stage – of course – my interests shifted too.

For a while people living in New Zealand have been asking where I rehearse my ideas, but my old refuge was all in Portuguese, so no point on disclosing its address. After a few weeks in doubt about keeping the old blog and changing its focus or creating a new one, I decided to create a new one.

My wish in this space is to share experiences, research interests and processes, grad school life, and – of course – experiences of living ‘out of the comfort zone’ while pursuing that comfort. Sometimes is not easy to be an outsider in a foreigner country. Also considering that aspect of current life conditions, every now and again, I am going to post about traveling and related topics, and why not, some old posts might migrate to this space, this time with the English version as well. In other words, the idea of creating this blog is to have some space to write less formally, and to prompt some creative writing. So the posts will have a maximum of 1000 words, enough to “philosophize” without becoming tiring – I hope! – and will be always followed by a Portuguese translation.

Finally, the title of the blog is loosely related to the topics I research and work with, and we will talk about it in the near future.

Olá!

Em primeiro lugar, bem-vindos!

Antes de começar a apresentar as idéias atuais para este blog, tenho que explicar uma coisa simples, mas um pouco difícil para um sangue latino americano. Eu tinha um blog antes deste, e o estou abandonando (e agora que eu publiquei, é oficial, ufa!). Meu velho refúgio virtual chamava-se ‘Porto da intensidade’.

Quando criei o blog antigo, estava começando a minha jornada para a realidade de viver em um país estrangeiro. Quando digo “começando a jornada”, bem … Isso significa, basicamente, começar a organizar a vida e inscrições de doutorado, fasezinha que levou 1 ano. Nessa fase, meu interesse com aquele blog era manter memórias e alguns conselhos sobre grandes mudanças na (minha) vida, enquanto compartilhava experiências com os outras pessoas.

Mas, como tudo na vida, o tempo também passa – é claro – e os meus interesses mudaram também.

Por um tempo, vários neozelandeses me perguntavam onde eu ensaio minhas idéias, mas meu velho refúgio era todo em Português, então, sem sentido divulgar o endereço. Depois de algumas semanas em dúvida entre manter o blog antigo e mudar o foco ou a criação de um novo, decidi criar um novo.

Meu desejo neste novo espaço é compartilhar experiências, interesses em pesquisa, processos de pesquisa, vida na pós-graduação, e – é claro – experiências de vida “fora da zona de conforto”. Às vezes não é fácil ser um outsider em um país estrangeiro. Considerando o aspecto das condições de vida atuais vou continuar postando sobre viagens e assuntos relacionados, e porque não, alguns posts antigos podem migrar para este espaço, desta vez acompanhados da versão em inglês. Em outras palavras, a idéia de criar este blog é ter um espaço para escrever menos formalmente, e para alimentar a escrita criativa. Assim, os posts terão no máximo 1000 palavras, o suficiente para “filosofar” sem ser cansativo – eu espero!

Por fim, o título do blog é vagamente relacionadas aos tópicos que pesquiso e trabalho, mas isso fica pra um próximo post.
