CELA Annual Conference

The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) had its Annual Conference in Austin, Texas, last month. The Conference website is here, and the program counted on parallel sessions based on the following topics:

• Design, Education & Pedagogy
• Communication & Visualization
• Urban Design
• Landscape Planning & Ecology
• Research & Methods
• People-Environment Relationships
• History, Theory & Culture
• Service Learning & Community Engagement
• Sustainability

Some great lectures were presented by Richard Haag (famous for Gas Works Parks and Bloedel Reserve. Rich also founded the Landscape Architecture Program at the University of Washington and holds multiple design awards), Amy S. Weisser (Adjunct Assistant Professor; Director of Exhibition Development at the Memorial Museum, National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center, in New York) and John R. Stilgoe (award-winning historian and photographer who is the Robert and Lois Orchard Professor in the History of Landscape at the Visual and Environmental Studies Department of Harvard University).

Although the conference is an international one, the presenters, students and public were predominantly from United States. Some groups from Canada and Australia, and researchers from other countries were also present. Great researches were presented and many different facets of the Landscape Architecture and Planning profession were discussed. This was my first Landscape Architecture conference. In the past I have been to some conferences in the architecture, sustainability and building science fields, and this was a great experience. CELA Annual Conference is certainly a conference to add to the list if you have interest in Landscape Architecture and Planning, teaching and research.

Algumas palestras foram apresentadas grandes profissionais por Richard Haag (famoso pelo trabalho no Gas Works Parks e pela Bloedel Reserve. Rich também fundou o Programa de Arquitetura da Paisagem da University of Washington e recebeu diversos prêmios), Amy S. Weisser (Professora Adjunta, Diretora de Exposição no Memorial Museum, National September 11 Memorial e Museu do World Trade Center, em Nova York) e John R. Stilgoe (premiado historiador e fotógrafo, é professor de História da Paisagem no Departamento de Estudos Visuais e Ambientais da Universidade de Harvard).

Embora a conferência seja internacional, os apresentadores, estudantes e público eram predominantemente dos Estados Unidos. Alguns grupos do Canadá e Austrália, bem como pesquisadores de outros países também estavam presentes. Pesquisas muito interessantes foram apresentadas e variados aspectos da profissão foram discutidos. O programa completo, título dos trabalhos apresentados e autores estão disponíveis aqui.

Esta foi a minha primeira conferência na área de Arquitetura da Paisagem. Há alguns anos estive em conferências das áreas arquitetura, conforto ambiental e sustentabilidade, e CELA foi sem dúvida uma ótima experiência. Para professores e pesquisadores da área de Arquitetura e Planejamento da Paisagem CELA Annual Conference deve, certamente, ser adicionada à lista de conferências internacionais a atender.
