Ilse Crawford on Interior Design
(…) We spend 87% of our lives inside buildings.
How they are designed really affects how we feel, how we behave.
Design is not just a visual thing.
It is a thought process. It is a skill.
Ultimately design is a tool to enhance our humanity.
It is a frame for life.
(Ilse Crawford: Interior Design; in Abstract: The Art of Design)
Ilse Crawford’s quote above refers to interior design, but it is valid for design in general and at any scale – from furniture, to buildings, to streets, to neighbourhoods, to landscapes. I can’t help but wonder if ‘87% of our lives inside buildings’ apply to all cultures, I wouldn’t think so. In any case, the way the places that surround us are designed influence how we live, how we behave, how we feel, how productive we are and, of course, our own identity.
The quote above was extracted from a documentary series for lovers of design: Abstract: The Art of Design. This is from Season 1, Episode 8 – and yes, I know I am very behind – and there is already a Season 2.
Enjoy!
